In the third installment of this sci-fi franchise, Vin Diesel returns as the titular intergalactic convict, whose vision is impaired by day but crystal clear by night. This time around, Diesel finds himself stranded on a barren, monster-filled planet after being double-crossed by former allies; when dueling teams of bounty hunters come looking for him, he hatches a plan to commandeer one of their ships. Director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway) draws from a wealth of inspiration—his most obvious influences include Howard Hawks’s macho actioners and Walter Hill’s sur-westerns—but he never commits to any particular viewpoint. Instead, we’re treated to a vibrant stylistic mishmash that works brilliantly in chunks but is ultimately too scattered to sustain any cohesion. Not exactly a good film, though a fascinating one.
