Road Hard

Radio and TV personality Adam Carolla stars as a pathetic fictionalized version of himself, a washed-up TV star touring the second-tier comedy circuit to make ends meet. Clearly inspired by Judd Apatow’s Funny People (2009) and Louis C.K.’s cable series Louie, this is fairly serious in its consideration of professional failure and male menopause. Yet Carolla, who cowrote and codirected with Kevin Hench, doesn’t have the acting chops to play drama, and much of the character’s angst comes off as celebrity whining (one of his biggest frustrations is that he can no longer get starring roles on TV, something we can all relate to). Rounding out the cast are other comedians past their prime: David Alan Grier, Jay Mohr, and Larry Miller.
