This lurid 1948 melodrama by Jean Negulesco has built up a considerable underground reputation. Richard Widmark and Cornel Wilde star as two old enemies who meet in a cafe perched on the U.S.-Canadian border. Negulesco is a curious case: an able stylist in the 40s (The Mask of Dimitrios, Three Strangers), his career degenerated into the insipidity of Daddy Long Legs in the 50s. With Ida Lupino and Celeste Holm. 95 min.
