Gang rivalry pits Jet Li against nearly everyone else in this movie after he escapes a Hong Kong prison and flies to California to avenge the death of his brother. The crime plot—the black and Chinese Mafias in Oakland become enmeshed in the scheme of a young white tycoon who wants to build a lucrative football stadium on the waterfront—is just complicated enough. And the hinted romance, featuring Aaliyah, makes for some decent drama and some fine comedy, including a brawl that hilariously subverts Li’s assertion that he “can’t hit a girl.” Andrzej Bartkowiak directed a screenplay by Eric Bernt and John Jarrell; with Russell Wong, Delroy Lindo, Isaiah Washington, Anthony Anderson, D.B. Woodside, and DMX. 115 min.
