This odd potpourri of kung fu, cop drama, romance, and the supernatural comes together better than you’d expect. Hong Kong star Andy Lau dons a muscle suit to play an exotic dancer called Big. Fleeing naked from a policewoman who wants to arrest him, he crosses paths with a vicious murderer; later he joins forces with the cop to catch the killer. A former Buddhist monk, Big can foretell people’s fates by reading their karma, and his partner’s future looks dire unless he can ward off predestined disaster. No philosophical statements emerge, but codirectors Johnny To and Ka-fai Wai generate an engrossing, dreamlike mood with stylized fights and dark, disorienting imagery. In Cantonese with subtitles. 93 min.
