Two beautiful, soulful yupsters (Karl Geary and Stephanie Szostak) meet, fall madly in love, and challenge themselves to live more authentically by quitting their jobs and doing whatever their little hearts desire—learning Spanish, riding a motorcycle, shoplifting, wearing the same clothes for days on end, and endlessly talking about their lives’ meaning. All that’s missing is for them to go out and “touch Indians,” as the equally deluded dropouts in Albert Brooks’s Lost in America attempted to do two decades ago. Unlike that brilliantly acidic little comedy, however, this 2006 drama plays it straight, with writer-director Jeff Winner mistaking narcissism for romantic charm and whimsy. 100 min.
