Marilyne Canto directed and stars in this one-note romantic drama (2013), as a dour, widowed working mom who sabotages her own prospects for happiness. Her undemanding job as a guide at a Paris art museum allows her plenty of quality time with her ten-year-old son (Samson Dajczman) as well as clandestine trysts with her bookseller boyfriend (Antoine Chappey), who’s losing patience with her refusal to get more intimate. Every dismissive “no” or “never” she utters kills the film’s momentum, and the happy ending feels fraudulent. The drab cinematography is by Laurent Brunet, who did better work on Seraphine and La Petite Jerusalem. In French with subtitles.
