About halfway through this maudlin Sunday school lesson, Robert Duvall recites a simple prayer with such humility and quiet authority that you might wish he were doing so in a far deeper film. Directed by Matthew Dean Russell, the movie is commendable for its earnestness and good intentions, presenting Christian virtue as a matter of personal betterment rather than moral superiority. Lucas Black stars as a wayward pro-golfer who finds peace and lowers his score after he’s forced to join the devout population of a small town in Texas. If the combination of Christian bromides and golf tips strikes you as a recipe for boredom, stay away. With Melissa Leo.
