She's Lost Control

A young woman (the excellent Brooke Bloom) pursuing her master’s degree in behavioral psychology works as a sex surrogate, dealing primarily with men who have intimacy issues and performance anxiety. Cutting between the woman’s client sessions and solitary private life, first-time writer-director Anja Marquardt paints a pointed, emotionally honest portrait of a woman detached from the public yet unable to avoid such typical life problems as a dysfunctional family and a straitened financial situation. As the title implies, she gradually loses her grip, but rather than drown, she gains newfound independence and the resolve to improve her situation. “All relationships end,” she tells a new client, but Marquardt reminds us that the most important relationship you have is with yourself.
