After the failure of his second feature, Giliap (1975), Swedish filmmaker Roy Andersson spent the next 25 years creating shorts and TV commercials before he made a comeback with Songs From the Second Floor. The commercials on this program weren’t available for preview, but the two shorts—Something Happened (1987, 24 min.) and World of Glory (1991, 14 min.)—are stylistically identical to Second Floor. Every scene transpires in a single, unbroken long shot, and in most of them a pronounced vanishing point establishes a sense of infinity behind the suffering, grotesque characters. Critics have praised Andersson for his black comedy, but there’s a lot more black here than comedy. Total running time is 71 minutes.
