Snow on the Pines

Peyman Moaadi, an actor and screenwriter best known for playing the husband in A Separation, makes his directorial debut with this understated domestic drama. The wife of a successful dentist learns that her husband has been unfaithful; rather than respond with outrage, she quietly reevaluates her life, coming to realize how unhappy she’d been before she learned the news. Moaadi employs a directorial style befitting the introverted heroine; he observes the characters in patient medium close-ups, charting subtle shifts in emotion. The tone is so consistently delicate that it verges on the monotonous, though the players make up for it with their nuanced work. In Farsi with subtitles.
