Uneven and slightly muddled futuristic horror story (1973)—not really science fiction, more like an antipollution PSA gone berserk. Charlton Heston stars as a T-shirted, grubby New York cop who, investigating the assassination of a political bigwig (Joseph Cotten), discovers how a corrupt ruling class maintains its hold on a decimated, starved, overpopulated, barbaric America in the year 2022. Directed by Richard Fleischer and marred by ludicrously composed visual effects. With Edward G. Robinson in his last screen performance. PG, 100 min.
