George Lopez stars as a substitute science teacher at a primarily Hispanic high school in Phoenix whose newly minted robotics club goes up against some of the country’s top engineering colleges in a national competition. Though based on a Wired magazine story, this sticks closely to the formulas of inspirational-teacher and sports-team dramas; distinguishing it from the pack is the fact that all four students who formed the club were undocumented. Sean McNamara directed an able cast that includes Jamie Lee Curtis as the principal, Marisa Tomei as one of Lopez’s fellow teachers, and Esai Morales as the hardened single father who softens up toward his son at the climax.
