A young Angeleno (Lou Taylor Pucci), fleeing an assault charge and traumatic memories of his mother’s death, hops a flight to Italy, where he travels along the southern coast, and falls hard for a beautiful woman (Nadia Hilker), who turns out to be not what she seems. The protagonist of this low-budget indie (2014) is so well characterized that it might have developed into a straight drama instead of the horror movie it becomes, though of course that’s the key to most good genre films. Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have also chosen their locations wisely; the supernatural elements of their story, which might have seemed cheesy in a familiar American setting, resonate amid the ancient architecture of Polignano a Mare, the village along the Adriatic Sea where this was shot.
