An updated remake of King Vidor’s 1937 tearjerker Stella Dallas about motherhood and sacrifice, with Bette Midler taking over the Barbara Stanwyck part. Trini Alvarado plays Stella’s daughter, and John Goodman, Stephen Collins, and Marsha Mason also costar. This is actually the third adaptation of the original Olive Higgins Prouty novel; the first was a 1925 silent film directed by Henry King. Here, TV veteran John Erman directs Robert Getchell’s script.
