After the lovely Helene (Edith Scob) dies in her mid-70s, her three grown children (Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling, Jeremie Renier) inherit her country home and its valuables, which earlier belonged to her adored uncle, an artist of international note. This extraordinary 2008 French drama by writer-director Olivier Assayas (Irma Vep, Demonlover) never turns into the expected family squabble over money or property; instead Assayas follows the three siblings through the complicated business of appraising, auctioning, donating, and giving away the antique furniture and world-class artworks. Each of them wrestles in his or her own way with their mother’s memory and their responsibility to the artist’s legacy, and as the grandchildren begin to emerge as characters too, one realizes the real dramatic conflict is between the past, which must be honored, and the present, which must be lived. In French with subtitles.
