Ten superb shorts from this year’s Sundance Film Festival. A straight-arrow student seduces his punk classmate with continuous replay of a Buzzcocks single in Sam Taylor-Wood’s UK charmer Love You More (2008). Denis Villeneuve satirizes conspicuous consumption in his Canadian entry Next Floor (2008), as banquet guests and their overladen table plummet ever downward, presumably to hell. Countertransference (2008), which Madeleine Olnek submitted as her thesis film for the MFA program at Columbia University, skewers the self-help movement with its sardonic tale of a downtrodden New Yorker and her predatory therapist. The best of the bunch is Don Hertzfeldt’s hand-drawn animation I Am So Proud of You (2008), the hilariously bleak saga of a stick-figure everyman with some serious family baggage. 115 min.
