A collection of short films, most of them worthless, that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The best by far is Andrew Ahn’s Dol, in which a gay Korean man (Joshua Kwak) attends his nephew’s first birthday party while his partner reluctantly stays home. Ahn, who shot the film on Super 16mm, devised Dol as a way to reveal his homosexuality to his parents, going so far as to cast members of his own family in the film. His intimate film plays like a home movie in the truest sense, capturing the day’s festivities while hinting at the unspoken issues that hover over every family. Another standout is Matt Lenski’s Meaning of Robots, a documentary sketch about a reclusive, sex-obsessed sci-fi enthusiast who spends his days making hoards of anatomically correct dolls that resemble the Maschinenmensch from Metropolis.
