Overwrought in refined, British ways—little touches that weigh a ton. Penelope Gilliatt’s screenplay is about a bisexual sculptor (Murray Head) carrying on simultaneous affairs with doctor Peter Finch and bureaucrat Glenda Jackson; he can’t understand why his lovers feel jealous of each other instead of settling for the little slivers of pleasure life provides. The director, John Schlesinger, has no real cinematic sense; he just picks a tone and a look and lets the action unwind. With Peggy Ashcroft, Vivian Pickles, and Maurice Denham.
