Greta Garbo and Clark Gable make an odd, uncomfortable pairing, and Robert Z. Leonard’s boxy direction does little to put them at ease, but this 1931 MGM melodrama is intriguing for the range of its precode situations. Garbo is an immigrant farm girl who runs away from the marriage her family has arranged for her and into the arms of engineer Gable; a forced separation leads her to an affair with a carnival huckster, and Gable refuses to forgive her. She drifts, unhappily, from wealthy lover to wealthy lover, until fate conspires to bring them together again. With Ian Keith, John Miljan, Alan Hale, and Jean Hersholt. 76 min.
