Long shelved by Paramount, this post-Seven, post-X-Files thriller stars Aaron Eckhart as a disgraced FBI agent tracking a psychic serial killer (Ben Kingsley). This subgenre of the police procedural has become almost as ritualized as the heinous crimes it depicts, so of course Eckhart develops an eerie affinity for the murderer, who seems to know him better than he knows himself. A novel twist in the second half succeeds in distinguishing this from the pack but also wrenches it away from the meager characters. E. Elias Merhige (Shadow of the Vampire) directed a script by Zak Penn (Behind Enemy Lines) that was later worked over by Billy Ray (Shattered Glass). With Carrie-Anne Moss and Harry Lennix. R, 100 min.
