To judge from book, video, and box office revenues, America’s rednecks love seeing themselves mocked, which permits Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay to easily straddle the red-blue divide with this NASCAR comedy. Ferrell plays the title speed demon, John C. Reilly is his lunkheaded sidekick, and Sacha Baron Cohen of Da Ali G Show enlarges his gallery of outsize ethnic stereotypes as Ricky Bobby’s racing nemesis, a haughty gay Frenchman. The laugh quotient lags well behind Ferrell and McKay’s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, but unlike many other purveyors of hip comedy, they’re consistently clever without being contemptuous of their audience. With Gary Cole, Jane Lynch, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Amy Adams. PG-13, 105 min.
