A 1983 restoration of Vittorio De Sica’s hit of 1953, in which Jennifer Jones and Montgomery Clift star as a married American woman and an Italian professor who fall in love in Rome, where she is visiting her sister. The film was originally released in the U.S. only in a severely truncated and altered form as Indiscretion of an American Wife; more than 30 minutes have been restored (including subplots and details of postwar Rome), and the musical numbers David O. Selznick tacked on are now gone. The script is the work of many credited and uncredited hands, including those of Cesare Zavattini, Luigi Chiarini, Truman Capote, Alberto Moravia, Carson McCullers, and Paul Gallico. A 35-millimeter print will be shown.
