Lurid and stylish, this 2008 Danish feature plays like a cross between The Postman Always Rings Twice and High Noon, with a dash of Gothic thriller. A disgraced Copenhagen cop (Jakob Cedergren) is temporarily reassigned to a backwater town where residents have gone missing. The tight-lipped, xenophobic citizens all live in fear of a violent alcoholic (Kim Bodnia) who beats his wife, yet they perversely undermine the lawman in his attempts to protect her. Director Henrik Ruben Genz revels in macabre humor (like the drinking bout that evokes old western gunfights), but he pitches the drama over the top. In Danish with subtitles.
