Satyajit Ray turns a bit more political and a little bolder in this tale of a medical student trying to find work in Calcutta. Ray’s incredible warmth and superbly understated visual style can charm even those (like me) who don’t find his films particularly compelling. In any event, it’s always a good idea to see a Ray film; he was indisputably one of the world cinema’s greatest forces (1970). In Bengali with subtitles.
