A nervy new teacher (Peter Coyote) in a Pacific northwest farm community during World War I introduces his students to a German opera—and a game called basketball. But these plot points are scripted mainly to test the mettle of a recent German immigrant (Robert Karl Burke), who’s much shorter than his bigoted classmates. A montage in which the townspeople discuss the opera’s plot as if it were juicy gossip would be funnier if the rest of the movie were even slightly less clunky and obvious.
