William Friedkin’s light, self-consciously trivial caper film looks like an apology for the pretentious bus of Sorcerer–it’s a cartoon, with an all-caricature cast (Peter Falk, Warren Oates, Gena Rowlands, Paul Sorvino, Peter Boyle) and hardly a responsible thought in its head. Entertaining in a slick; vaguely cynical sort of way, but like most of Friedkin’s films, it has serious problems with pace and narrative construction. When the thieves begin to fall out, they fall out in clumps, making a mess of the final passages.
