This early feature by Australian director Peter Weir is one of his best, combining all of his customary elements of visual mystery without the pretentious obfuscation that mars some of his mood pieces. It’s an old but serviceable premise: a town that preys on passersby. The film is fast, funny, and very knowing about using its low-budget techniques to maximum effect. Along with Mad Max, it might have made a better path for the Australian cinema to follow than all the self-pitying, overstuffed period dramas turned out to humor self-congratulatory critics and audiences.
