Directed by Louie Psihoyos, this well-intentioned documentary exposes the harvesting of dolphins by Japanese fishermen, yet its theatrics suggest a cross between reality TV and Mission: Impossible. Ric O’Barry, who captured and trained five dolphins for the 60s TV series Flipper, now blames the show for having popularized dolphin performers at theme parks and spends his time trying to save the endangered mammals. Accompanied by photographers, divers, and marine experts, he thwarts a media blackout in the coastal town of Taiji, whose locals trap migrating dolphins in a sequestered lagoon. Hidden cameras capture disturbing footage of the rejected dolphins being brutally killed; equally harrowing is the news that the mercury-tainted meat was once marketed to Taiji schoolchildren.
