Seven meets The Silence of the Lambs” is the distributor’s high concept for this thriller-chiller set in the French Alps, though it doesn’t have the soul of a serious horror movie. The biology department of an isolated mountain university is conducting suspicious experiments, dead bodies are somebody’s art form, and two law enforcers with clashing personalities buddy up—stock elements director Mathieu Kassovitz works into a marvelously gruesome opening-credits sequence, moments of intense atmosphere or wry humor, and some high-altitude action that’s risky for the cast, crew, and investors. But the hedging tone doesn’t make the weak plot any less tiresome or the hackneyed ending any more tongue-in-cheek. Kassovitz wrote the screenplay with Jean-Christophe Grangé, based on Grangé’s novel; with Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel. 105 min.
