While Robert Siodmak’s direction isn’t particularly original, this 1946 film noir has its effective passages. Aided by nearly seamless special effects, Olivia de Havilland plays identical twins, one of whom has committed the murder and neither of whom will talk. Declaring the case to make “no more sense to me than Chinese music,” a detective (Thomas Mitchell) enlists the help of a psychiatrist (Lew Ayres), who diagnoses one twin as insane while falling in love with the other. De Havilland is icily persuasive as the bad sister, and Siodmak makes good use of mirrors and other typical noir devices to underscore the good-versus-evil theme.
