The neatest thing about Giuseppe Capotondi’s debut feature is how it reverses the mechanics of most crime movies: the criminal activity (which includes murder, robbery, and identity forging) is presented coldly and matter-of-factly, while the mundane moments are made to seem tense with possibility. A lonely cleaning woman in her mid-30s (Ksenia Rappoport) falls in love with a stranger at a speed-dating event (Filippo Timi), and trouble follows almost immediately. The story is filled with surprises, but these aren’t as fascinating as the ineffable detail—the sound of music underwater, for instance. As the heroine, Rappoport creates an exquisite, multifaceted character from the old film noir archetype of a woman in flight; in this case she’s fleeing not only danger but herself. In Italian with subtitles.
