The Sound of Music and Eva Peron are recurring motifs in The Edge of Her Skirt, a 17-minute 16-millimeter movie (to be shown on video here) written and directed by Melanie Cassidy and shot by Richard Foley, much of it in the ballroom at the School of the Art Institute. The associations of seminarrative images—several women in ball gowns, a little girl with glasses, a male-female couple whose adeptly crafted facial expressions and gestures suggest tension and connection—gently probe female iconography and dramatic stereotypes. On the same program, Shoot the Women First, a 19-minute video featuring Cassidy and shot by Foley in which writer-director Ulrike Kubatta treats injustices against women as if they were ironic.
