Will Ferrell and Adam McKay picked up this low-budget DV comedy to distribute through their Gary Sanchez Productions, which makes sense: it plays exactly like a Will Ferrell comedy, but better, because Ferrell’s not in it. Danny McBride, best known perhaps as one of the good ol’ boys in David Gordon Green’s All the Real Girls, stars as the thickheaded master of a suburban tae kwon do academy. You’ve seen that old gag in which a martial artist quietly summons all his fury, chops explosively at a stack of bricks, and breaks his hand? The whole movie is like that—which is to say, pretty funny. Jody Hill directed. R, 85 min.
