Sad-faced Italian comic Toto stars in this moralistic 1956 farce about three neighbors facing eviction from their tenement in Rome who begin printing 10,000-lira bills using a stolen engraving plate that they’ve inherited. Much of the comedy exploits the contrasting personalities of the timid counterfeiters, heightened by the tongue-twisting banter between Toto and frequent sidekick Peppino De Filippo, but director Camillo Mastrocinque also stresses the characters’ inherent decency and even sneaks in a socialist message.
