The Icing

The prolific Czech filmmaker Jan Hrebejk (Up and Down) follows his worst film to date, the overwrought drama Honeymoon, with a thematically similar and marginally superior comedy (2014) about a wedding party gone wrong. Based on a successful play, it takes place at a rural tavern, improbably managed by an actress in TV commercials, where a just-married bride spends a long, drunken evening with her husband’s secret lover. Playwright Petr Kolecko throws in some over-the-top narrative twist every ten or 15 minutes, but after the first couple they fail to surprise. Hrebejk’s graceful approach to film comedy feels ill suited to Kolecko’s vulgar showmanship, which calls out for a brassier style. In Czech with subtitles.
