Occasionally amusing but instantly forgettable, this Steve Carell comedy seems designed to be watched on airplanes. He plays a successful Las Vegas magician who’s forced to better himself after longtime partner Steve Buscemi quits and his arrogant behavior gets him fired. As in some of Carrell’s other recent vehicles (Date Night; Crazy, Stupid, Love), he seems almost desperate for the audience to find him adorable, though the humor here is generally good-natured and the other actors are allowed some funny moments too—particularly Jim Carrey, playing a pretentious street magician modeled after David Blaine. Network TV veteran Don Scardino directed.
