The Kill Team

This gripping documentary unravels the story of the so-called “Kill Team,” a group of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan who manufactured combat kills by murdering unarmed civilians in Kandahar province. Director Dan Krauss originally got involved when a defense attorney hired him to record trial material for Adam Winfield, one of the 12 soldiers charged. Winfield’s story of trying to report the crimes through his parents back home but ultimately being bullied into posing for a photo with a murder victim becomes the spine of the story, proving that truth may be the first casualty of war but conscience is a close second. Other soldiers charged in the 2010 crimes comment as well; their testimony paints a dire picture of gung-ho kids so disappointed by the dull work of building a stable society that they decide to start collecting human fingers.
