A widowed actress (Leila Hatami of A Separation) is visited by the ghost of her husband (Ali Mosaffa, Hatami’s real-life spouse) while preparing for her next film. Or is that the plot of her next film? Or a film within that film? This Iranian hall of mirrors—which often recalls the labyrinthine dramas of Raul Ruiz (Mysteries of Lisbon)—shows how the act of storytelling opens up a world of possibilities, some seductive and some scary. Mosaffa directed his own script; he’s not much of a visual stylist, but that gives his literary ideas plenty of room to expand. In Farsi with subtitles.
