An odd, contemplative western by Robert Aldrich, with Kirk Douglas and Rock Hudson leading a cattle drive, more than a little distracted by Dorothy Malone. Dalton Trumbo’s screenplay aspires to classical tragedy (Hudson is cast as Douglas’s nemesis), yet Aldrich’s marvelously evocative use of the landscape keeps things relatively down to earth. With Carol Lynley, Joseph Cotten, and Neville Brand (1961).
