The Lego Movie

Reviewing Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace, Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote, “Not bad for a toy commercial.” The same might be said for this feature-length animation, about the zany adventures of some anthropomorphic Lego characters as they battle a corporate CEO (given voice by Will Ferrell) who’s outlawed creativity in favor of uniformity and forces his products on the masses. Writer-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who displayed a knack for slapstick with 21 Jump Street (2012), fill the script with delightfully absurd one-liners and sharp pop culture references. But, contrary to the themes of nonconformity and anticonsumerism, this is essentially a big-screen advertisement for the popular construction sets.
