Even making allowances for the forgettable Lerner-Loewe score and the stridency of Richard Kiley as the aviator who encounters a strange little visitor from another planet in the middle of the Sahara, this 1974 Stanley Donen translation of the Saint-Exupery classic leaves too much to be desired. Curiously lifeless and undramatic, the film plays out its rather thin hand early on; what remains is at best a thing of brilliant Donen bits enmeshed in a mass of unexploited possibilities. With Gene Wilder as the fox and Bob Fosse as the snake. G, 88 min.
