Adapted from a novel by Nicholas Sparks, this soft-core romance touches on the Iraq war, but any topical relevance is incidental to the formulaic torrid love affair. A U.S. marine on his third tour of duty (Zac Efron) is drawn to a photo of a young honey (Taylor Schilling) and barely escapes being killed by a land mine. Back home he tracks her down to express his gratitude in person, but he’s too tongue-tied to explain and instead takes a job at her dog-training camp. Subsequently he bonds with her son, angers the child’s birth father, and turns her on by unloading heavy bags from his flatbed truck and quoting Dr. Seuss. As long as Efron’s shirt comes off, he could play an accountant and no one in the target audience would care.
