This 1934 thriller was Alfred Hitchcock’s first international success, although he disliked it enough to feel that a remake was warranted in 1956. His perfectionist urge wasn’t misplaced: although the film is fast and consistently clever, it is more deeply flawed than any other Hitchcock film of the period, failing to find a thematic connection between its imaginative set pieces. With Leslie Banks, Edna Best, and Peter Lorre (in his first English-speaking role).
