The “femme fatale” in this private-detective story happens to be a man—a waiter who’s defended by a detective in a restaurant brawl—and their growing friendship threatens life and limb for reasons we learn long before the detective does. Set in Yokohama, in locations that retain their 50s style, the story concerns conflicts between familial and other kinds of loyalty and questions about ethnic identity. The gangster-movie plot, themes, and allusions aren’t nearly as intriguing as the earnestly kitschy black-and-white wide-screen images or the mesmerizing, minimalist sound effects (1993).
