Satyajit Ray interrupted his Apu trilogy to make this fablelike 1959 film about an aging Indian aristocrat (Chhabi Biswas, one of India’s most respected performers) who hopes to halt the decline of his fortunes by staging a musical soiree in the grand colonial manner. Ray’s social insight is not dimmed by treating his subject in this distant, allegorical manner; if anything it’s intensified by the closer focus he’s able to train on his characters. In Bengali with subtitles. 100 min.
