This is the fourth feature that Will Ferrell and writer-director Adam McKay have collaborated on, and once again they deliver laugh-out-loud if ultimately disposable comedy with mixed messages about arrested male development. Ferrell plays a milquetoast New York policeman most comfortable behind his desk, and Mark Wahlberg plays his partner, eager to redeem himself after accidentally shooting Yankees star Derek Jeter in the leg. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson are around early in a hilarious send-up of badass cops who routinely trash the city in pursuit of criminals and whose demise becomes the ultimate expression in perverse machismo, and Michael Keaton is a stitch as an emasculated police captain moonlighting as a retail store manager. With Rob Riggle and Damon Wayans Jr.
