Shyam Benegal, one of the filmmakers responsible for the creation of a socially conscious “new wave” within the largely escapist Indian cinema, made his debut with this 1974 feature. The son of a land-owning family is sent to oversee a distant estate; while waiting for his new wife to join him, he has an affair with the wife of a servant, and gradually their relationship deepens into love. But when his wife finally appears, he unhesitatingly sends his mistress, now pregnant, back to the servant quarters.
