A 1974 documentary that traces the fortunes of those of the 600 Swiss volunteers who fought with the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War and survived. The film describes the survivors’ battlefield experiences and motives for enlisting, but also evidently poses some hard questions about the nature of their radical commitment in the light of present-day bourgeois compromises. Director Richard Dindo intercuts contemporary interviews with original documentary footage (from Joris Ivens’s The Spanish Earth) to create “an ironic commentary on the fate of yesterday’s radicals.” Dindo will be present at the Saturday screening.
