A genuine knockabout farce that scores resoundingly as skillful satire, bawdy comedy, and hilarious high adventure. Richard Lester (A Hard Day’s Night, Petulia) takes the Dumas classic and turns it into a Keaton-esque pop epic. With terrific performances from Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, and Frank Finlay as the musketeers; Michael York as d’Artagnan; Spike Milligan and Faye Dunaway; and Charlton Heston as Richelieu. A special tip of the critic’s hat to Raquel Welch, who proves conclusively that her true metier is bumbling physical comedy; the suspicion here is that she could’ve been another Lucille Ball.
